Research area

After some experience in consulting, I decided to engage in academic research because I wanted to better understand individual and interpersonal workplace dynamics. My motivation stems from a desire to empower people to perform at the best of their possibilities, and this has led me to engage in research projects on several topics:

Creativity. Being especially curious about how artistic and business logics can interact and synergise, I am studying how people and teams can be more creative in organisations and how creativity is evaluated. In my research on workplace creativity, I study how sense of power impacts employee creativity; how the occurrence of errors in healthcare teams impacts these teams' creativity; how conformity and creativity can co-exist at work (Magni & Manzoni, 2020); and how uncertainty regulation can facilitate creativity in individuals and teams. Together with Beatrice Manzoni and Pier Vittorio Mannucci, I also wrote a book on creativity in organizations (in Italian) published by Egea in 2021. Relatedly, I also study organizational dynamics in the creative industries, and specifically value creation in the live music industry (Magni, 2022).

Artificial Intelligence. The introduction of AI is disrupting the workplace and will do so more and more. Taking a humanistic approach to AI, I study how people interpret and react to the actions and work of AI, and how the usage of AI affects their behaviours at work. With my research I aim to understand how organizational processes are changing as AI takes over tasks that were previously carried out by humans. In particular, I study how people evaluate the creativity of AI productions and how they assess the utilization of AI in organizational processes, such as recruitment and selection.

Diversity. I am interested in how diverse people can get to work together and I am driven to help workers perform at their best. I believe in empowering individual differences rather than standardising one's personality to conform. I have conducted research on age diversity, in particular studying how the psychological contract differs across generations (Magni & Manzoni, 2020), as well as generational differences in learning styles (Manzoni et al., 2020). I am expanding my research to the analysis of deep-level diversity and its impact on team dynamics and processes, creativity, and performance.

Learning. Workers are more and more required to be engaged in continuous learning to maintain their skills updated and to keep up with ever faster technological advances. With my research collaborators, I studied the usage of web-based simulations (Caporarello et al., 2020), as well as how different goal orientations reciprocally relate to performance and thus potentially create virtous cycles over time (Magni et al., 2021).
